Thousands of pilgrims are attending Martyrs Day celebrations in Namugongo with president Museveni as chief guest.
Addressing the congregation at the Catholic martyrs shrine Namugongo, President Yoweri Museveni called upon the church in Uganda to embrace Swahili, so as to foster national and regional unity.
Museveni says that with Swahili, the problem caused by many languages in the entire East African region will be solved.
“Swahili is a unifying language for Africa short of which long ago, Uganda suffered because there was no unity and peace. I am very happy that the priests have begun preaching in Swahili” says president Museveni.
Meanwhile President Museveni calls on spiritual leaders to spearhead the fight against poverty so as to ensure development in the country, and also improve people’s livelihood.
“it is unchristian to live in poverty because the bible tell us that Christians must live by example and the power to succeed in life was bestowed upon them by God” Museveni has explained.
Several pilgrims trekked hundreds of miles to get to Namugongo. The pilgrimage has also attracted celebrants from neighboring countries including Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria and South Africa among others.
