Electoral Commission has defended Uganda
Revenue Authority URA’s move to task aspirants
for the tax clearance certificate saying it is
within the law.
EC deputy spokesperson, Paul Bukenya has
clarified that under the presidential Elections Act,
a tax clearance certificate from the political
aspirants is a requirement. This follows two
presidential aspirants challenging the legality of
the tax clearance certificate before being
nominated by the commission.
On Monday, URA issued a statement saying
politicians should get a tax clearance certificate
as evidence for accountability to show voters
that they have not defaulted on any taxes, before
asking for their votes.
