Legislators have proposed to stop public
financing of presidential candidates in a bid to
weed out aspirants who show up for money.
The legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee,
during consideration of the Presidential Elections
Bill (amendment) 2015 yesterday said that
Presidency is “not for jokers” and that anyone
who wishes to contest for it should be financially
capable to run their campaigns.
The bill proposes to increase the sh20m given to
presidential candidates for campaigns to
shs50m, provide a vehicle and security.
