The Supreme Court has upheld the judgement of
the Court of Appeal in the murder trial of former
Arua Municipality MP, Hussein Akbar Godi who
was convicted for the murder of his wife. Godi
was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in jail
in 2011 by the High Court judge Lawrence
Gidudu for the murder of his wife Rehema
Caesar Nasur which happened in 2008 in Mukono
district. Later in the same year, Godi challenged
the sentence in the Court of Appeal but the
appeal was rejected. Godi finally appealed in the
highest appellate court, the Supreme Court. In
the appeal, Godi claimed that the trial judge and
Court of Appeal failed to properly assess the
evidence on record, hence arriving at a wrong
conclusion. However out of the coram of five
justices in the Supreme court, four of them
Jotham Tumwesigye, John Wilson Tsekooko, Dr
Esther Mayambala Kisakye and Christine Kitumba
upheld the decision of the lower court. Justice
Galdino Okello disagreed saying there was no
sufficient evidence to convict Godi. In the key
judgement read by Justice Wilson Tsekooko, the
four justices claimed that Godi’s appeal had no
merit.
